Often referred to as endovenous laser or radiofrequency (RF) therapy, this minimally invasive procedure is a great treatment option for varicose veins. It’s performed in-office and typically requires only a small incision. But first, we need to know what varicose veins are.

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted blood vessels that bulge just under the skin’s surface. They usually appear in your legs, feet, or ankles, and they may appear bluish or skin-colored and can often feel heavy.

Most people have some degree of varicose veins at some point in their lives. If they’re not treated, these swollen blood vessels can cause problems down the road, such as pain, swelling, and itching.

In a typical radiofrequency ablation procedure, we insert a thin catheter into the diseased vein and guide it to the affected area using ultrasound imaging. During the procedure, RF energy is directed through the catheter to the inner lining of the vein. This causes the vein to heat and shrink, effectively sealing it shut. This process helps to prevent further venous reflux and reduces pressure in your legs.

Once the vein is sealed, blood can now be naturally redirected to healthier veins that can transport it properly back up to your heart. The vein will continue to be treated over time as it heals, but the appearance of varicose veins will diminish significantly in most cases.

If you’ve tried wearing compression stockings and haven’t seen any change in your varicose veins, it’s time to seek a consultation for treatment. At Premier Surgery Center of Clifton, we can assess your condition and recommend the best treatment plan.
